Chapter 22: Epilogue, Part Five: The Sounds of Silence

From British Airways: Crickets

"Any word yet?"

Saturday, October 7, 2023

Hello, darkness my old friend

And the sign said, "The word from the airline
Is written on their website walls
And baggage halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence"

With apologies to Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel, 1974.

This is Day Six. That sound you hear? Crickets. Nada. Nothing. Zip.

On their web site, British Airways helpfully offers this advice:

Aren't they great? Not only are they passing the buck (passing the pound?) but they've even got a grammatical error in there. "...a greater level of cover..." Ought that not be "coverage?" Maybe it's a British idiom thing; I surely don't know.

And they suggest that we contact our insurer "first." I can just imagine the first question my insurer would ask should I call them. "Have you contacted the airline? Have you filed a claim with them?" Don't you think that is what I would hear?

But there is a bright spot on the horizon. I paid for our trip with a credit card--one of those "fancy" ones. Here are two screenshots from the Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card Website.

This benefit is misleading. It doesn't cover you if your baggage is delayed on your way home. The theory behind that is that you don't need to buy things to tide you over even if your baggage was delayed because you have all of that stuff at home. Voila!

But the lost luggage coverage will apply if the bag is, indeed lost. Back on April 24, 2023, I bought our tickets using my Chase card.

Note that this is $3,000 per passenger, not per bag. I'll bet there is some fine print somewhere that will severely restrict this coverage. I do kind of sort of remember that one of those designed ball gowns was B4's and the other one was mine.

I did have a half dozen custom shirts and a bunch of other stuff of mine in the missing bag; most of the valuable items on the list were, however, hers.

I anticipate a temporary cessation of blog entries until I actually know something. I've no idea when that might be.
